Happy 2025! A wise friend once shared that he spends the first day of each new year doing what he loves most. It’s a wonderful tradition—but why limit it to just one day? What if every day included moments that align with what we love and value most?
To do this, it’s important to understand your “why”: the personal reason behind your work, your lifestyle, and your goals. Your “why” should be clear, simple, and actionable. When you know your purpose, you can make deliberate choices to honor it, even in small ways.
This year, my resolution is to live in alignment with my “why” every day. For me, this means incorporating the six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine into my daily routine to support my health and well-being.
These pillars are:
- Eating healthy, nutrient-rich food.
- Staying physically active with intentional movement.
- Prioritizing restorative sleep.
- Managing stress in a healthy way.
- Avoiding risky behaviors and substances.
- Nurturing positive social connections.
Here’s how I plan to honor my “why”:
- Since nourishing my body makes me feel my best, I will prepare and eat nutrient-rich meals centered around a whole food, plant-based diet daily.
- Spending time in nature with my loved ones, friends, and dogs brings me joy, so I’ll make it a priority to get outside every day, often with my dogs by my side.
- To manage stress and stay grounded, I’ll practice 4-7-8 breathing and repeat a positive mantra each day, especially during challenging moments.
- To foster social connection, I’ll schedule regular hikes with friends and neighbors and stay connected with distant loved ones through phone calls, especially with my mother.
- Making the world a better place motivates me, so I’ll pick up litter on walks and find small ways to help others—whether it’s an anonymous kind act or supporting my family, neighbors, colleagues, and patients.
What about you? How will you honor your “why”?
Resolutions often center on health, and that’s a wonderful goal. I invite you to focus your resolutions this year on living with purpose and treating yourself and others with kindness. Each step you take, no matter how small, is a way to honor who you are and what you value.
Together, we can make each day meaningful.
